Congratulations to Tom Kilgore, Paul Inderhees, and the Whitley City Ministry for receiving the Spirit of Sr. Dorothy Stang Award. This award is given to faculty members, parish ministers, parishioners active in social justice ministry, graduating seniors in the Catholic high schools, and parish youth ministry programs in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. This award is given by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Mission Office.
The Whitley City Ministry and its leaders were nominated by our parish because the Whitley City Ministry shows Christ-like solidarity with people who are poor/marginalized by direct financial assistance to all of the separate organizations it supports in the form of significant monetary grants and the two build trips each year. It demonstrates care for the earth/environment by keeping appliances, home building supplies, and home furnishings from landfills by picking up and delivering the supplies to Whitley City, KY several times a year. Finally, it applies Catholic Social Teaching in cross-cultural service, or teaching ministry, by providing the people of Whitley City the items, medical care, and housing needed in a way that preserves dignity and family structure and, at the same time, providing parishioners an option for sustainably donating used appliances, building materials, furniture, and toys.
