The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for exploring the Catholic faith and entering the Church.
RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process for exploring the Catholic faith, supporting candidates through their preparation, and accepting them as members of our Church community. The preparation process and length varies, as RCIA takes into consideration the distinctive history and spiritual needs of each person.
Many adults who seek to explore the Catholic faith at Good Shepherd are directed to our weekly RCIA group. The teachings of Scripture and Christian tradition are explored, along with elements of our Creed, the sacraments, moral living, and the social teachings of the Church. Participants are encouraged to develop a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, by reflecting on his life and message, and through prayer and participation at Mass. A variety of Catholic customs are introduced and discussed.
Special celebrations at Sunday Mass bring the RCIA candidates together with the Good Shepherd community for a sharing of faith and support. At the Easter Vigil, many will come into full membership in the Roman Catholic Church and receive the Sacraments of Initiation.
Classes begin in September. Email or phone Emily Weierman in the parish office to learn more.
Other opportunities for preparation are also available to meet individual needs. For more details, and to discuss how Good Shepherd can begin your process of exploring the Catholic Church, call for an appointment with Emily Weierman, Coordinator of Adult Formation.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) is for all who have reached the age of reason who wish to join the Catholic Church. The needs of each young person will be considered based on age and religious background and an appropriate plan made for each individual. Parents should contact the program coordinator.
